Book Review:

This book is primarily intended for undergraduate and master students as well as engineers, scientists, professors and researchers looking to extend their knowledge of combustion.

Professionals working in the field of combustion may well find many points of interest, highlighted by the book’s logical and global approach to phenomena, which considers mechanical, thermal and chemical aspects simultaneously.

The introduction contains a physical description of the phenomena involved, and describes how these phenomena are applied by various combustion devices. It emphasises the need for a global and quantitatives approach. The first three chapters provide the basic theory required, in thermodynamics, chemistry and the mechanics of fluids, and includes worked examples at the end of each chapter. The following seven chapters are each concerned with a specific type of problem: the inflammation of a medium, lamiar flames and deflagrations, turbulent flames, detonation, the ignition of a flame or a deflagration, the combustion of liquids and the emission of pollutants by flames.

The book prioritises and understanding of the physical and chemical aspects of the phenomena, and lays particular emphasis on experimental analyses and modern numerical simulations, and on rhe way in which these phenomenal are translated into equations (with certain approximations) in order to obtain quantitative results and to create simulations.
