Book Review:

COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language) has been adopted standard programming medium for administrative applications of the computer. The language has been continuously reviewed and modified under the sponsorship of the Conference on Data Systems Language (CODASYL), a working committee composed of representatives for major language users in industry and government as well as computer manufactures.

This book has been developed for use as a basic text for college-level courses in information system. COBOL is used as the programming language and as the vehicle by which the systems concepts discussed in this book are implemented. Reflective of the information system orientation of this book are implemented. Reflective of the information system orientation of this book, primary consideration is given to the concepts of data base systems and file processing. The description of data processing equipment is given minor consideration and is included only when such discussion enhances the converage of system concepts. An understanding of COBOL enables the students to implements, test, and apply the systems conceps included in this book, and it is for this reason that a substantial portion of this book, and it is for this reason that a substantial portion of this book is devoted to the study of this language.

As compared with the previous edition of this book, the present edition has been substantially reorganized so that students will be prepared to write complete COBOL programs much earlier. The concepts of structured programming have been incorporated throughout the text, resulting in an improvement in the readability and self-documenting feature of COBOL programs. Coverage has been expanded in the areas of data base concepts, structured programming, modular programs and subrountines, and the Report Writer feature of COBOL. On the other hand, based on responses from users of the first edition of this book, the coverage of simulation models has been deleted. Finally, the number of applications-oriented examples and exercises has been increased throughout the book, and a case study in sequential file processing has been added as a separate chapter.
